Santa is lucky to have the elves to assist him at Christmas. They make toys and create lists for all the children who have been nice throughout the year. Other elves, such as Ruby, clean the rooms and make things neat for everyone. Ruby likes her job, because it helps others.
Ruby works well and one day her boss, Sapphire, wants her to clean Santa's cottage. "Now, you will work there. Please, open the windows to freshen up the room. Clean the floors, and remove the dust. And, I beg you, don't touch anything else!"
"Okay!" – Ruby says. She takes her supplies and goes to clean.
This is Santa's cottage. There is a shiny golden Star above it. It is a Christmas Star, the source of all Christmas magic and the essence of what children believe. They say that sometimes toys can move because of its magnificent power.
A lot of snow is on the cottage roof, but it is warm inside.
Ruby opens the windows, and then grabs her rags and dust pan. She removes the dust. Only one area is not clean – the fireplace mantel, which has an old fashion doll in a cute red dress on top. She is covered with a thick layer of dust. Ruby cleans the mantel, but when she wants to clean the doll, the toy moves.
